A double-bass player who claimed £56,000 in disability benefits because he ‘couldn’t walk 10 yards,has been jailed after he was caught jumping around on stage . David Ballantyne, 60,  was receiving regular disability allowance after claiming he couldn’t work following a knee injury. He also claimed he had pain in his neck and shoulders. However, he was found to be cheating the system when he was caught on camera jumping around on stage with his band Chuck Wagon and playing his double-bass with such ‘exuberance and enthusiasm’ it even saw him stand on the side of it.

Delegates of the ongoing National Conference have asked the National Assembly to reject the request made by President Goodluck Jonathan asking for the Assembly’s approval for a $1billion loan to aid the war against the Islamic sect, Boko Haram. Femi Falana (SAN), a member of the Confab said the President must explain what he had been doing with the budgets made for defence in the past few years.  “The request made by President Jonathan for approval of the Senate for a loan of $1 bn to fight the menace of the Boko Haram sect should be rejected in its entirety. Between 2010 and 2013 over N3tn was budgeted for defence. “Under the Appropriation Bill signed into law on May 23 this year, 20 per cent of the entire federal budget i.e. the sum of N968.127bn out of N4.962tn was earmarked for defence. Two middle aged men have been arrested by Officers of the Abia state NSCDC command after being nabbed with the dead body of a two year old girl. The suspects,Chibuike Anubuife from Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State and Jonathan Nwogu from Mgboko Umuola in Obingwa LGA of Abia state were caught at Eyimba filling station near ariaria, Aba as they were carrying the girl's corpse in a sack for burial. According to state commandant of the NSCDC, Andy Dateer, his officers were on a routine patrol when they caught the evil men. Anubuife is believed to be the main suspect as he confessed seeing Jonathan for the first time the day they were caught. According to him, he had asked Jonathan to help him bury the girl, they were in the process of negotiation when they were arrested.

Panic struck Amakohia Ubi community in Owerri West Council Area of Imo State on Monday, as a five-month-old baby boy slipped from the hands of his minder, a 10-year-old girl, who was being chased by a masquerade and fell inside a large boiling pot of soup. An eye witness told our correspondent that the 10-year-old girl, who also suffered severe injuries, was fleeing from one of the “ Owu” masquerades that had chased her in front of a house while carrying the deceased toddler and as she ran to the back of the house, she stumbled and the toddler slipped from her hands and fell into a pot of soup being prepared by a food vendor. According to the witness, the masquerade, on realising the havoc caused, took to his heels. However, efforts to revive the baby proved abortive as the baby was pronounced dead by a doctor, after some good Samaritans rushed him to a nearby hospital.   A female student of Babcock University, Busayo Ogunkoya has been shot dead by a security guard at a popular hotel in Ikorodu, Lagos State. Busayo, 22, had accompanied her boyfriend to a birthday party at Mambillah Hotel in Ikorodu. A security guard who was drunk and handling a gun reportedly accidentally shot Busayo in the neck. The victim was rushed tot he hospital where she was pronounced dead. Sources narrated to PUNCH, “The incident happened on Saturday night when Busayo and her friends were having a party. “She did not know the person celebrating, but she was invited to the party by her boyfriend. “The party was going on fine until the security man, who was holding a gun which he claimed he had seized from some robbers, mishandled the gun and fired a bullet which hit Busayo.
