GIRLEMPOWERED: StretchCentre Sets Out To Empower 900 Girls In Isheri-Osun Lagos Come May 31ST

Omotola Fawunmi, a young development worker, an HACEY Girl Child Ambassador and a managing partner at STRETCH Consulting, has decided to take her love and advocacy campaign for the Empowerment of the girl child to a new level. She’d be celebrating her next birthday with 900 girls between the ages of 13 and 25 in Isheri Oshun neighbourhood, a low income suburb in Lagos State.
According to Omotola, there seems to be a gap and a form of emptiness that accompany young people home after attending motivational seminars where brilliant talks are delivered. According to her, and from her own personal experience, such talks eventually only get them excited without any definite actionable steps or follow up programs.
Miss Fawunmi thinks that exciting young people alone won’t bring about the desired result and transformation that they truly need. She strongly feels that there should be room for direct community based mentorship and an opportunity to connect to the peculiar needs of young people after they must have attended seminars laced with many discussions and speeches.
To this end, Omotola and her host of other female friends who are doing exceptionally well in their areas of specialization will be educating these 900 girls on why they must keep their shoulders high with a healthy dose of self Confidence garnished with good Character and highly developed competence. They will be sharing their personal experiences on what it entails to be confident as a young lady. And all that it takes to uphold good character and competence irrespective of the challenges faced as they advance in years.
Omotola strongly feels that talk is cheap and that the participants’ confidence can be better raised by also providing them with free girly materials like perfumes, dresses, shoes, make-up boxes, belts, novels or inspirational books that can add value to all the ladies in attendance. To Omotola, the managing partner at Stretch Consulting, she explained that giving the ladies few fishes won’t hurt just as they learn how to fish alongside.
As a community based and community led initiative, Omotola leveraging on her network of development partners, friends and associates, seeks to ensure the girls are empowered in practical and impactful ways. A bulk of the neatly used and usable girly materials that will occupy the she-boxes are being collected from Omotola’s vast network of female friends and colleagues. Other side attraction at the event which will kick off by 10am on the 31st of May 2014 in Isheri Osun Community School, Lagos include; a movie, group discussions, Sex Straight Talk and institution of a mentoring program for the 900 girls at the event.
